Color Maze Game: How to Play, Tips & Dead-End Fixes

Learn the color maze game: how the ball slides, why one wrong first move can trap you, a full worked solution and tips for Puzzit's 1,000 free levels.

Color Maze Game: How to Play, Tips & Dead-End Fixes

A color maze game gives you a plain grey maze, a single paint ball and one rule that changes everything: the ball does not stop when you let go. It rolls in a straight line until it hits a wall, painting every tile it crosses. Paint the whole maze and the level is done. On Puzzit this puzzle is called Color Maze Ball, and you can play it free in any browser with no download. This guide explains the rules, shows how a single wrong opening move can make a level impossible, walks through a full solution and gives you the tips that make the trickier mazes click.

How to Play the Color Maze Game

Open Color Maze Ball and you will see a maze of grey tiles with a glossy ball sitting on one of them. The tile under the ball already counts as painted, which is why a fresh level never starts at 0%. The basic rules are short:

  • Press an arrow key, swipe, or tap one of the four arrow buttons to send the ball up, down, left or right.
  • The ball keeps rolling until the next square in that direction is a wall. You cannot stop it halfway down a corridor.
  • Every tile the ball rolls over takes on the ball’s color. Each level uses a new color, so it is easy to tell when you have moved on.
  • If the ball is already against a wall in the direction you pick, nothing happens.
  • When every tile is colored, the level is complete and you can jump to the next one or stay to admire your work.

Above the board, Puzzit shows three numbers: the current level, the painted percentage and your moves. The Stats button opens your current level, best level, levels completed and total moves. Under the board, Reset puts the ball back at the start of the level you are on, with every tile grey again. That button matters more than it looks, as the next section shows.

Can You Get Stuck in a Color Maze?

Yes, and this is the question most color maze pages skip. Some versions of the game promise that you never need to restart a level. On Puzzit that is not true: a careless first move can leave tiles that the ball will never be able to reach, no matter how long you keep swiping.

Take Level 17. It is a small hook shape with only eight tiles, and the ball starts in the middle of the long right-hand column. There are three possible opening moves. We ran every possible line of play through a small solver: two of the three openings, up and down, already make the level unsolvable. Counting every position the ball can reach from the start, 18 of 37 are dead ends. The trap is a short side corridor of two tiles. The only way to roll down it is to stop at its end first, and the only move that ever stops the ball there is a slide to the left from the starting square. Leave the start any other way and that corridor stays grey forever.

HOW TO TELL YOU ARE STUCK

If the painted percentage has not gone up for three or four moves and the ball keeps landing on the same few squares, you are almost certainly in a dead end. Do not keep wandering. Press Reset, look at the starting position again and ask which tiles only the start square can reach.

Worked Example: Solving Level 19 in Five Moves

Level 19 is a 3 by 3 block with the bottom middle tile missing, so it looks like a small arch. The ball starts on the left side of the middle row. Here is the reasoning, not just the answer.

  1. Spot the awkward tile. The center tile can only be painted by a slide along the middle row, or by a slide down from the top middle tile, which the ball can only stop on in rare cases. Rows are your best bet.
  2. Check where the ball can rest. If you go up or down first, the ball lands in a corner. From any corner, every slide just takes it to another corner, and no corner-to-corner slide passes through the center. That opening is a dead end.
  3. So the first move is Right. The ball rolls across the middle row and paints the center on the way.
  4. Down, then Up. The ball drops into the bottom right leg and rolls back up the whole right column to the top corner.
  5. Left, then Down. It sweeps the top row and finally rolls down the left column, filling the last leg. Done: five moves, 100% painted.

Notice the pattern. The start square is often the only place from which a particular slide is possible, so the first move deserves the most thought. Once you have used the start square, you may never get back to it.

Color Maze Strategy: Tips That Work on Every Level

  • Find the stopping squares first. The ball can only rest where a wall blocks the way ahead: corners, dead ends and the ends of corridors. Before moving, scan for them. Every tile must sit on a straight line between two places the ball can stop.
  • Plan the opening from the start square. As Levels 17 and 19 show, the starting tile is frequently a one-time launch pad. Ask what can only be reached from here, and do that first.
  • Treat one-tile pockets as one-way streets. When the ball rolls into a dead-end pocket, the only exit is straight back the way it came. Enter a pocket when the slide out of it is also useful.
  • Paint long corridors with one slide. A long corridor with a single stopping square at each end takes just one move to fill. Short side branches are where the real puzzle is.
  • Do not chase a low move count on your first try. Puzzit records moves, but you do not lose anything for using extra ones, and there is no star rating. Clear the level first, then come back and try to match the shortest route as a personal challenge.
  • Reset early. Ten wasted moves inside a dead end teach you less than one fresh look at the start.

Color Maze Game FAQ

Is the color maze game free to play?

Yes. Color Maze Ball on Puzzit is free, runs in the browser on desktop, tablet and phone, and needs no download or account.

How many levels does Color Maze Ball have?

There are 1,000 levels. The early ones are tiny mazes of a handful of tiles, so they double as a tutorial for the slide-until-wall rule before the layouts get busier.

Is every color maze level solvable?

Every level we played could be solved from its starting position, but you can make a level impossible during play with the wrong opening move, which is why Puzzit gives you a Reset button. If your painted percentage stops rising, reset and rethink your first move.

How do you play the color maze ball game with a keyboard?

Use the four arrow keys. Each press sends the ball as far as it can go in that direction. On touch screens, swipe or tap the on-screen arrows instead.

Does the number of moves matter?

Not for clearing a level. Puzzit counts your moves and keeps a total in Stats, but there is no penalty or star rating, so you can treat a low move count as a bonus challenge.

Does my progress save?

Yes. Your current level is remembered in your browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off on the same device.
