About Connections

Connections is a daily New York Times puzzle where you sort 16 words into four hidden groups of four. The challenge is that many words seem to fit more than one group.

How to play Connections

Select four words you think share a connection and press Submit. If you're right, the group is revealed with its category and color. If you're wrong, you lose one of your four mistakes.

Groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is usually the most straightforward and purple the trickiest, often relying on wordplay.

ConnectionsTips & Strategies

  • Look for the red herrings first: words that seem to fit two groups are usually placed to mislead you.
  • Solve the group you're most sure of before attempting the hard ones; each correct group narrows the rest.
  • For the purple group, think about wordplay: hidden words, homophones, prefixes or words that complete a phrase.
  • Use the shuffle button to see the words in new combinations when you're stuck.
  • Don't submit a guess you're unsure of if you only have one mistake left; work through the other groups first.
