Number Match Game: How to Play Match 10 and Win

The number match game is one of those puzzles you can learn in ten seconds and still be thinking about an hour later. You get a grid of digits from 1 to 9 and clear it two at a time: pair two equal numbers, or two numbers that add up to 10. On Puzzit it is called Match 10, it runs free in your browser with no download, and this guide covers the exact rules, a simple counting trick that tells you whether a board can be cleared at all, and the strategy that keeps you from flooding the grid with extra lines.

THE BOARD

9 columns × 8 rows

72 numbers from 1 to 9 at the start of every game.

A MATCH

Equal, or adds to 10

7 + 7, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5 and so on. Tap both tiles.

THE PATH

Same row or column

Empty cells between the pair are fine; numbers in the way are not.

WHEN STUCK

Add Lines, Shuffle, Compact

Three tools to make new pairs. Each has a cost, so use them in the right order.

What Is the Number Match Game?

Number match is a digital version of a pen-and-paper pastime that many people first played in a school notebook: write out rows of digits, cross off pairs that are equal or sum to ten, and copy the leftovers onto new lines when you run out of moves. It goes by a lot of names. Developers and players call it Take Ten, Seeds (or 10 Seeds), Numberzilla, Numberama and Match 10, and searches for a “make ten game” usually land on the same idea. Phone apps such as Easybrain’s Number Match made it hugely popular, but the core puzzle is the same everywhere: find a legal pair, clear it, and keep the grid from filling up.

What makes it more than a simple arithmetic drill is the path rule. A pair only counts if nothing blocks the line between the two tiles, so the order you clear things in matters a lot. That is why it sits alongside logic games like Sudoku rather than pure speed-math games.

How to Play Number Match on Puzzit

Open Match 10 on Puzzit and you will see a 9-wide grid of 72 numbers with three counters above it: tiles left, moves and pairs. Here is how to play number match there:

  • Tap two numbers. They match if they are the same digit or add up to 10.
  • Keep them in line. Both tiles must be in the same row or the same column, with only empty cells between them.
  • Clear the pair. Matched tiles disappear and leave empty cells, which can open new long-distance pairs.
  • Use the tools when stuck. Add Lines drops up to two rows of fresh random numbers into empty spaces, Shuffle rearranges all the remaining numbers, and Compact slides everything together toward the top to close the gaps.
  • Win by clearing every number. The CLEAR percentage in the corner tracks how close you are.

There are only five ways to make ten, so it is worth knowing them cold:

Puzzit Match 10 vs Classic Number Match Apps

If you have played number match online elsewhere and a move you expect does not work here, this is why. Puzzit keeps the stricter, row-and-column version of the rules:

RulePuzzit Match 10Typical number match app
DirectionsRow or column onlyRow, column and diagonal
Line wrapNo: end of one row does not link to the nextYes: last tile of a row can pair with the first of the next
GapsPairs can span any number of empty cellsSame

Fewer legal directions means fewer free pairs, so planning the order of your moves matters more on Puzzit. The upside is that Shuffle and Compact give you two extra ways out of a dead end before you have to add new numbers.

Number Match Strategy: 7 Tips That Actually Help

1. Scan the gaps first. Neighbouring pairs are easy to see. The ones people miss sit at opposite ends of a row or column with empty cells between them. Before each move, run your eye along every row and column that has a hole in it.

2. Clear nested pairs from the inside out. This is the most satisfying pattern in the game. Here is a real row from a Puzzit board:

793397162

Start: 7 9 3 3 9 7 sits inside one row.

79  97162

Match the two 3s. The 9s are now joined across the gap.

7    7162

Match the 9s, and the two 7s now see each other across four empty cells.

Three moves, six tiles, and each one set up the next. Whenever you spot a pair, check what is waiting on either side of it.

3. Treat 5s as a priority. Any two random digits from 1 to 9 form a valid pair about 21% of the time (17 of the 81 possible combinations). A 5 is half as flexible: only 1 in 9 random digits can partner it. When two 5s can see each other, take that pair before the line between them gets blocked.

4. Do a quick parity check. This is the trick most guides skip, and it answers the question “can this board even be cleared?” Split the digits into five families: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, and 5 alone. Every legal match removes two tiles from the same family, so a family with an odd count will always leave one tile behind. On one of our opening boards the 1/9 family had 17 tiles and the 2/8 family had 21, so no sequence of moves could clear it without new numbers. Knowing that early tells you to stop hunting for a perfect clear and to keep your stragglers in reachable spots for when you add lines.

5. Use Compact as a move, not a reset. Compact slides the remaining numbers together in reading order, so tiles that were far apart become neighbours. It also breaks long-distance pairs you had lined up across gaps, so take those first, then compact when the board is full of scattered holes.

6. Save Add Lines for last. Adding lines fills empty cells with new random numbers, which raises the tiles-left count. A good order when you think you are stuck: check every row and column again, then Compact, then Shuffle, and only then Add Lines. New numbers can also fix an odd family from tip 4, which is the best reason to add them.

7. Plan the endgame. With ten or fewer tiles left, options shrink fast. Look at the last few numbers as a set, pair off the families, and make the moves that keep paths open for the final pairs.

Number Match FAQ

How do you play the number match game?

Tap two numbers that are equal or add up to 10. On Puzzit they must be in the same row or column with only empty cells between them. Matched tiles disappear, and you win by clearing the whole grid.

Can you match numbers diagonally in number match?

In many apps, yes. In Puzzit Match 10, no: pairs must share a row or column, and the end of one row does not wrap to the start of the next.

What is the number match game also called?

The same idea is known as Take Ten, Seeds or 10 Seeds, Numberzilla, Numberama and Match 10. They all use the equal-or-sum-to-ten rule, with small differences in which directions count.

Is every number match board solvable?

Not with the starting numbers alone. Count the five families (1/9, 2/8, 3/7, 4/6 and 5). If any family has an odd number of tiles, one will be left over until you add new numbers.

Can I play number match online free without downloading?

Yes. Match 10 on Puzzit runs in any desktop or mobile browser for free, with no app or sign-up needed.

What is the best number match strategy?

Look for pairs across empty cells first, clear nested pairs from the inside out, take 5-5 pairs early, and use Compact and Shuffle before Add Lines so you do not crowd the board.
