If you finish the daily Wordle in three minutes and want more, you are in good company. The good news is that games like Wordle now cover almost every kind of puzzle: multi-board word guessing, word grouping, equation guessing, geography and quick-fire quizzes. This guide rounds up the free Wordle-style games on Puzzit, explains what each one actually asks you to do (we played every game below before writing about it), and suggests a short daily routine so you can pick the right puzzle for your mood.

What makes a game "like Wordle"?

Wordle was created by software engineer Josh Wardle, went public in October 2021 and was bought by The New York Times on 31 January 2022. Its formula is simple, and most daily games like Wordle borrow at least three of its four ingredients:

• A hidden answer you have to work out, not just recall.
• A small number of guesses (six in the original), so every try matters.
• Feedback after each guess, usually green for right spot, yellow for wrong spot and grey for not in the answer.
• One shared puzzle a day, so you can compare results with friends and keep a streak.

Keep those four ingredients in mind and it becomes easy to judge any Wordle alternative: the closer it sticks to all four, the more it will scratch the same itch.

The best word games like Wordle

Word Guess is the closest match: guess a secret five-letter word in six tries with the familiar color feedback. Two details make it worth bookmarking. First, a word that is not in the dictionary is rejected with a "Not in dictionary" message and does not use up a try, so a typo never costs you the game. Second, a toggle at the top switches to a six-letter board (still six tries), which is a genuine step up in difficulty once five letters feel routine.

Quad Word is the Puzzit take on Quordle: four hidden five-letter words, four boards and nine guesses. Every word you type is played on all four boards at once, so the skill shifts from finding one word to gathering information efficiently. Squaredly is a daily word-swipe grid. You get a 5x5 square of letters and a short list of hidden words to find (four on the day we played) by dragging through neighbouring letters. It feels closer to Squardle or NYT Strands than to Wordle, and it is a nice change of pace because there is no guess limit, only a star rating.

Games like Wordle and Connections

Wordle and NYT Connections (which launched in June 2023 and asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four) are the two daily puzzles most people play together. Word Connect is the Puzzit version of the second one: 16 tiles, four secret groups and four mistakes allowed, with shuffle and deselect buttons. On the day we played, the board included SHED, GARAGE, DITCH, CLUB, LOUNGE and LEAGUE, which shows the usual trick: several words could fit more than one group, and only one arrangement uses all sixteen.

Chain It sits between the two. You see the first word of a chain and the first letter plus length of every word after it, and each neighbouring pair must form a compound word or common phrase (BATTLE, ROYAL, NAVY, BLUE, BERRY is the example on the game page). It has a Daily mode and a Levels mode, so it doubles as an unlimited word game.

Games like Wordle but not words

A question that comes up again and again on Reddit is which games like Wordle use something other than letters. Three Puzzit games fit:

• Trivia Guess: answer a trivia question by tapping the right letters from a jumbled set, with hint, shuffle and skip buttons.
• Acronym Quiz: type the full words behind abbreviations such as OMW, with categories to choose from and a row for each letter.

How to get better at Wordle-style games

The same habits help in nearly every puzzle above. In Word Guess and Quad Word, open with words that test common letters without repeats; CRANE followed by MOIST, for example, checks ten different letters in two guesses. In Quad Word that leaves seven guesses for four answers, which is plenty if you stop exploring as soon as one board has only one or two candidates left.

In Word Connect, look for the word that fits several groups before you submit anything, and lock in the most specific group first; the vague groups get easier once fewer tiles remain. In Mathle, place the equals sign early, because its position tells you how many digits the answer side has.
